Teachers should use formative assessment to:
  • provide information which students are moving towards the success criteria
  • identify what has/ has not been taught well
  • identify strengths and weaknesses in teaching
  • set adjustments on how to teach the concept(s) being measured
  • enable students to self-assess their progress and take action in terms of where they are going, how they are getting there and where they might go next.

GoogleForms
Set up a survey or quiz on GoogleForms, view responses on a GoogleSheet or graphs. Choose destination spreadsheets, use in data analysis.
Free
Simple - moderate
Summer 2013: Images & video can now be added to forms. Advantage: Ss and Ts are already logged in, spreadsheets saved directly to Drive.
Quia.com
Subscription service for online quizzes, games. Set up classes and question banks, students can log in. Many types of response accepted. Huge bank of shared resources, good analytics.
US$49 per year
Moderate
Allows notations to be used (Socrative does not), though does need some HTML to do so.
Socrative: student 'clickers'
Use online or free mobile app to administer formative assessment quizzes, 'space races' and collect data for 'exit tickets' or free response. Space races are fun, potential also for exit tickets. Data exports as csv file.
Free
Simple
Quick set-up for quizzes, though no notations. Images recently added. Free student app for mobile can be used, though not needed.
